There are many causes of shoulder pain. Some shoulder pain subsides within two weeks, but that is not always the case. If you have been experiencing shoulder pain for longer than two weeks, it is important to visit your doctor. Shoulder pain can occur because of a number of different conditions, from bursitis to rotator cuff injuries to frozen shoulder and thoracic outlet syndrome. In other cases, shoulder pain isn’t actually caused by the shoulder joint, but rather the neck.

Physiotherapy Exercises For Shoulder Pain

Many people find relief through professional physiotherapy at a physiotherapy clinic. The following exercises can provide a bit of pain relief at home, acting as a supplement to physiotherapy. However, it is recommended that you consult a medical professional before attempting these exercises to ensure that they don’t aggravate your specific condition.

Physiotherapy Exercises for Shoulder Pain

Pendulum Exercise

For this exercise, begin by standing. Place your dominant hand on the back of a chair. Allow your other arm hang down and then swing it gently back and forth, just like a pendulum, and then in a circular motion. Repeat five times in a single session and repeat two or three times every day.

Shoulder Stretch

Begin by standing. Next, move your shoulders toward the ceiling and hold for five seconds. Next, squeeze your shoulder blades behind you and hold the position for five seconds. Lastly, move your shoulder blades toward the floor, and hold for another five seconds. You can repeat this exercise ten times in a single session.

Door Lean

The third exercise on this list is the door lean. Begin by standing in a doorway. Raise your arms to a position just above your head and place them on the wall. Next, you want to move your body forward until you feel a stretch in your shoulders. Hold the position for 15 to 30 seconds and repeat a total of three times. Note that if you have a shoulder impingement, you should avoid this exercise.
