Knee Meniscus Injuries/tears Treatment

Knee Meniscus Injuries/tears

There are two menisci of the knee, one medial and one lateral which help and are designed to act as shock absorption to the knee as well as to add increased gliding or sliding potential between the tibia and femur.

They are slightly more mobile anteriorly (forward) than posteriorly (backward). Somewhat triangular shaped and their proximity and location results in the menisci being poorly vascularized (supplied by blood). As a result Meniscus Injuries tend to heal very slowly.

Causes Of Meniscus Injuries Are:

  • Twisting injuries while foot is weight bearing and anchored to the ground. Tears are graded from mild to moderate and to severe
  • Mild tear exhibit slight pain and swelling and may dissipate after two to three weeks
  • Moderate tears can cause pain at the inside of the knee. Swelling begins slowly bet gets worse after two to three days. The knee may feel stiff and tight. Pain can diminish after time but overuse or twisting the knee can re-injure it. If the tear isn’t treated the pain can continue and stay for years
  • Severe tears can see pieces of the meniscus move into the joint space and your knee will have difficulty straightening out. Your knee may feel wobbly or give way without warning. The knee can catch, pop or lock up

Treatment For Meniscus Injuries

  • Depending on the state of the injury treatment can help to strengthen the muscles crossing the joint to stabilize the structure surround the knee
  • Treatment would consist of reducing inflammation, swelling if any and pain
  • Ultimately if the injury is very severe surgery may be required
